School Update (01-25-2021)

As an update and reminder to all students who had been participating in in-person learning during Q2, we will not have this in place for tomorrow’s Q3 Tuesday.  We are working on a new schedule and working to identify possible new students based on the teachers willing to come in and teach from their classrooms with students. We hope to make calls to families by the end of this week.

Later this week, students and parents should be able to look up at the grades earned for the semester for periods 4, 5 and 6 in PowerSchool.

Some parents may receive a text or email from the school on Wednesday, January 27th, around noon. We have about 70 students whom we do not have an email address and front office staff is following up to make sure we have a means to communicate with our families.

This last bit of information is for juniors and their parents that were to take the PSAT tomorrow at school.  It has been cancelled.  Please note the communication below sent out to parents and the community.

Dear San Diego Unified School District students and families,

Unfortunately, the current weather has forced us to cancel the PSAT/NMSQT exam scheduled for tomorrow since our sites are not able to provide the optimal outdoor testing conditions.  The inclement weather creates the potential exposure of testing materials and other testing irregularities that could invalidate the tests.  Our district leadership contacted College Board to request that the test be postponed until after the storm had passed or allow our students to take the exam online. Unfortunately, their response was that “the combined forces of the pandemic and weather prohibit the administration of the exam for tomorrow.”

Our alternative solution is to offer the SAT to our juniors at no cost on March 24, 2021.  This exam also serves as an alternate entry to the National Merit scholarship and has the added benefit of being used for potential college admissions applications.

Rest assured that we explored every possible option before deciding to cancel the exam due to safety and test security concerns. The College Board has committed to work with us to ensure that San Diego’s students will have another opportunity on March 24 to take College Board exams to gain the benefits of the PSAT/NMSQT.

NEXT STEPS to register for the SAT on March 24th:

  1. Students will need to complete a short application by April 1 to be eligible for this alternative entry to the National Merit Scholarship.  https://forms.nationalmerit.org/alternateentry
  2. It is recommended that students get COVID tested before the exam.  The county has free tests or you may check with your child’s health care provider for their options.  https://www.sandiegocounty.gov/content/sdc/hhsa/programs/phs/community_epidemiology/dc/2019-nCoV/testing.html
  3. Students who test positive CANNOT participate in the exam. All students will need to complete a health questionnaire or Clear Pass before coming to campus.
  4. Schools will email details about arrival time for the March 24 exam date in early March.
  5. This opportunity is completely voluntary and not required.

Questions? Please contact your school’s coordinator or district coordinator [email protected].

What safety precautions are in place?

We have planned with the county health department and district nursing, facilities and leadership to ensure a safe testing environment. For details, please review these slides:   https://tinyurl.com/PSAT2021students

I’m not comfortable testing in person but want to practice for the SAT.  Are there other options?

YES!  In addition to Khan Academy, there are two free practice tests on the CollegeBoard website: visit https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10/practice/full-length-practice-tests
