UCHS School Update for Athletics (11-14-2020)

Happy Saturday Centurions,

As you may have heard, season one sports (fall) are still scheduled to start on December 12th.  In an effort to provide proper conditioning for some sports, outdoor sports, the district is authorizing the establishment of AAU club teams for Cross Country, Football and Field Hockey. Once all health and safety protocols are in place, these three teams may start with Phase 1 Conditioning on site starting on or after Monday, November 16th.

All students interested in competing in Cross Country, Football and Field Hickey should email the Head Coaches for these sports to find out if they will be having on campus conditioning practices. Some teams may decide to keep meeting informally off campus and not come together for training on campus.

All should know that whether groups are meeting on campus or off, athletes and coaches are coming together voluntarily and their work with one another is not tied to the school. In the case of on campus conditioning, these activities are through an outside group (AAU) and the district is allowing this independent group to have access to school facilities. With this partnership, all coaches, athletes, parents have to follow all health guidelines required for on campus workouts.

The contacts for the coaches are listed her:

Cross Country:  Gimi McCarthy ([email protected])

Football: Ryan Price ([email protected])

Field Hockey: Amber Zimmerman ([email protected])

Should the coaches and teams decide to hold on campus conditioning sessions, we will be working with our coaches, athletes, parents and to make sure all are clear on what is and is not permissible. All should know that these conditioning days are voluntary for both athletes and coaches.

I am sure the conditioning start of some sports will likely draw some questions: why these sports and not others? Why are we starting conditioning with some teams when we don’t even have school open for student learning? Despite moving into a more restrictive code of the county (purple), the conditioning days are still permitted as they are to be held outdoors.

We will address these questions as best we can when we hold the Zoom meetings later in the week.  As a reminder, this is a phased-in-process for certain teams to be able to condition sooner before the official start later in December.

I will have more to share about a Phase 1 Expansion for in-person learning opportunity for some students next week.
