Jeff Olivero, Principal

Meet Mr. O!

Principal Olivero

As the son of a former principal, my dad was principal of Poway High School in the 60's, I grew up in a number of states during my primary and secondary school years. I started Kindergarten in Poway California, before moving to Vienna, Virginia where I attended first through third grade. In fourth and fifth grade my family and I found ourselves in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

My middle school and high school years were spent in Foster City/San Mateo, California. I received my bachelor's degree in psychology from San Francisco State University, and went on to earn my teaching credential from San Diego State University.

For 14 years I worked as a teacher, department chair, athletic director, and coach in a number of schools before starting my administrative career. My teaching assignments took me to Crawford High School, Gompers Secondary School, Emerald Middle School, Patrick Henry High School, and Serra High School. I earned my administrative credential from both National University and San Diego State University.

I started my administrative career as a vice principal at DePortola Middle School in 1999. After a brief experience there, I transferred to become a vice principal at Mira Mesa High School (MMHS) in 2001. Two years later in 2003, I was selected to be principal at MMHS, where I served for five years. In 2005, the school became recognized as a California Distinguished School. In 2006 while principal of MMHS, I was selected as National University (Educator) Alumni of the Year. In 2007, I was selected as San Diego Administrators Association Secondary Administrator of the Year. From 2008 through 2010, I served as a School Improvement Officer (coach and supervisor) for over 19 high school principals in the San Diego Unified School District.

While many still refer to me as "Coach," I have always considered myself an educator first, while helping kids as my top priority. I have a son who graduated from college in 2014- USC. The best news is that he has been able to land a number of jobs over the last five years working for the PAC-12 schools, the United States Men's National Soccer Team, and the Los Angeles Lakers. I have been married to my lovely and energetic wife, Stephanie, since 1990. She works one or two days a week at the Mariott as a hotel concierge. She has a second job, I call it a hobby, where she buys used furniture and items, restores them, and sells them.

I have three main goals our UC students: 1) They work incredibly hard in school; 2) They surround themselves with friends who are positive; and 3) They have fun at UCHS. As parents, I have two main goals: 1) Get involved; and 2) Be informed. Together, we have a responsibility to prepare our young people to meet our school-wide learning goals: 1) Contributing members to the community; 2) Collaborative citizens; 3) Effective communicators; 4) Independent thinkers; and 5) Technologically skilled. Last, as I have shared with parents, our job is to get our kids off our payroll and onto theirs. :) In 2020-2021, I will serve my eleventh year as principal of University City High School. Clap it Up! UC U-Know!
