Good afternoon Centurions,

We hope on Thursday and today you were able to take the time necessary in class to discuss, and make sense of what we saw take place in our nation’s capital on Wednesday, January 6, 2021.  It truly was an historic day in our United States history.

I know, for myself, it has taken me time to organize my own feelings and thoughts about what I saw take place.  It helped to be able to bounce thoughts and questions off of people I care about and value.  I hope that you find this opportunity yourselves, in talking to your parents, your family, your classmates and friends.

Some have asked, what do we tell our children and what do we tell our students?  I know I do not have all the answers, but I do know what we saw and heard on Wednesday was wrong and unacceptable. What may have started as a peaceful protest, ended in a mob attack on our nation’s capital.

My hope is that in the coming days we learn more about the actions that lead up to and during the assault on our nation’s capital. We as a nation need to know that our democracy will stand no matter our political differences.  Furthermore, any and all individuals should be held accountable for their actions regarding the events leading up to and during the attack on Congress.

To summarize, Cents, there is a definitive right and there is a definitive wrong. While we do have examples of civil disobedience, which seek to purposely go against laws that seem inconsistent and are unfair to certain people, the actions of Wednesday were an attack on our nation's democracy.  Parents, please take the time to have conversations with your teenagers about the events. It is truly a learning moment for all of us!  Please read the message from our Superintendent for additional resources that might be used to engage your student.

Have a good weekend, Mr. O.
